Carcanet Press Shortlisted for Northern Small Press of the Year

Wednesday, 19 Feb 2025

No Text We're so excited to share the news that Carcanet Press has been shortlisted for Northern Small Press of the Year in the British Book Awards for the seventh year running!

Many congratulations to our fellow shortlistees in the Northern category, Saraband, Peepal Tree, UCLan, Bluemoose, Dead Ink, Fly On The Wall and Comma!

The category is open small publishers with a turnover of less than £5m, and a regional winner will be chosen before contending for the overall prize. The overall winner will also be in contention for Independent Publisher of the Year.

The award celebrates small presses delivering books that reach beyond the traditional literary landscape, while battling increased costs and a mixed economic outlook.

The prize will be announced at the ceremony for The British Book Awards at Grosvenor House London on 13th May 2024. The regional and country winners will be announced on Monday, 10th March 2025, while the overall winner will be named at The British Book Awards ceremony at Grosvenor House London on Monday, 12th May 2025.

Philip Jones, editor of The Bookseller and chair of the judges for The British Book Awards, said: 'This cohort of smaller publishers never fails to impress me. In 2024, they ducked, dived, hunkered down, and then double- downed to come out from a tough year in magnificent shape. Here, every sale is hard-gained, no author left behind, with many of these presses putting the onus on human creativity as the foundation of their businesses. In a mixed environment for small-press publishing, these finalists stepped up and made themselves big, getting noticed within and without their niches as they grew sales and pivoted towards the main-stream.'
