  • The poems in Philip Holmes’s fourth collection are as widespread in time, covering a 16–year period, as their settings are scattered geographically. These range from Lincolnshire and Yorkshire, where he grew up, to Bucharest, Kyoto and the USA, where he has lived since 1977. His robust treatment of the timeless themes of nature, memory and language gives the collection its unity and strength.

    Philip Holmes was born in Lincolnshire in 1945. He took degrees in Engineering at Oxford and Southampton before moving to the USA, where he is Professor of Mechanics and Applied Mathematics at Princeton University.
