If it were not for Carcanet, my library would be unbearably impoverished.

Roberto Longhi (1890 - 1970)
- About
- Reviews
Robert Longhi (1890-1970) is regarded by the Italians as their most important connoisseur, critic and art historian; at the same time he is read and enjoyed for his great and magical gifts as a prose stylist. Little from Longhi's vast corpus has been translated into English. Three Studies, a book of his crucial essays Masolino and Masaccio, Caravaggio and His Forerunners, and Carlo Braccaesco, was published in 1995 by Sheep Meadow and now Piero della Francesca.
Praise for Roberto Longhi (1890 - 1970)
'It is difficult to overestimate the impact of Roberto Longhi's 'Piero della Francesca', which appeared in 1927. Simply stated, it formed the twentieth-century response ot the artist and laid out much of the terrain for subsequent scholarship.' Keith Christiansen, From the Introduction
'Roberto Longhi is the most brilliant Italian Art Historian of our century and a stylist of intoxicating powers. Longhi encouraged in his followers the sort of fanatical (or craven?) loyalty that is more associated with university professors...few of Longhi's very idiosncratic works have been translated into English; but, thanks to the enterprise of Stanley Moss' Sheep Meadow Press, this situation is at last being remedied.' Francis Haskell, The New York Review of Books
