  • Josep Carner (1884–1970) was one of the leading members of a brilliant generation of Catalan poets. His work extends from the early years of the century to the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War. He was also a journalist, playwright, translator and diplomat. Loyal to the Republic, he could never return to Spain after the civil war. With his Belgian wife he lived in Mexico from 1939 to 1945, teaching at the Colegio de México. They later moved to Belgium.
