  • Sándor Weöres (1913–1989) studied at the University of Pécs. His doctoral dissertation The Birth of the Poem was published in 1939. He settled in Budapest in 1951. In the Stalinist period from 1948 he was able to publish little until 1964. He translated a wide range of poetry into Hungarian, including (to mention English originals only) some Shakespeare, nonsense poems of Edward Lear and Lewis Carroll, and Eliot’s The Waste Land.
